It’s strange to think about it now, but Michelle never set out to be a bankruptcy attorney. She got her law degree from Michigan State University Law School with the goal of to working in politics and public service. But, as life often does, her plans changed and she happily went down a different career path. Instead of serving people through their government, she chose to help people individually through practicing law.
Michelle began her legal career working in a bankruptcy firm in 2002. She was immediately bothered by how clients were treated by the system. She learned that it was common practice for bankruptcy firms to shuttle their clients in and out like cattle. These firms treated clients like a number, and often clients didn’t even meet their attorney until their actual court hearing! This struck a nerve with Michelle, and at this early stage she decided that every client deserved to be treated with respect, compassion, dignity and without judgment. When she formed her own bankruptcy law firm in 2010, she was able to put those ideals into practice.
Michelle’s philosophy about practicing bankruptcy law is that “Everyone deserves a second chance without judgment”. For many area bankruptcy law firms, a client is just a file number. You are lucky if you even meet with an attorney. Michelle thinks this approach is deplorable and the client deserves her full attention. When you are a client of Michelle’s, you are treated with dignity and respect, and clients love her for that. Michelle says the most rewarding thing about her job is when clients have that moment where their anxiety and stress is released when she tells them that, inevitably, things are going to be alright.
Michelle’s ability, creativity, and experience gives her clients their best chance at a fresh start, and at the same time, gives them a sense of hope and security that things will get better. Anyone considering bankruptcy is probably in a stressful time in their life, and Michelle recognizes this and uses her skills to steer them through the often-complicated process to get the financial fresh start that the federal bankruptcy laws afford them.
And her clients love her for it. She considers it an “honor and privilege” to work with each and every client she represents and takes no matter lightly. Michelle doesn’t treat each client as a client — she treats each and every one as if they were a friend….as many clients turn out to be. That makes her dedication unparalleled to other lawyers and has led to her reputation as a compassionate, knowledgeable, and very effective bankruptcy lawyer who gets results for her clients.
